Hot Dish or Casserole?I’m a true Minnesotan and proud of it! So let me be and embrace the “Hotdish”, but for the whole blog I’ll call it a casserole because I know it’s better in terms of SEO or making Google happy and trust me, I want to make Google happy!

Tuna Macaroni Casserole Recipe (2)

This recipe actually come from my Grandma Wiese who was a North Dakotan originally but we’ll still call it a hotdish. I was craving this something fierce for the last week for some unknown reason. Maybe it was because it screams “comfort food” to me and it brings back all those memories of being at Grandma’s house. A place where I only have great memories. I’m sure she was smiling down on me when I was making this and my hubby was gobbling it up! She also made some amazing chicken and dumplings. I wonder if my mom snagged that recipe. I’m not sure if it would ever taste the same without Grandma’s love though!

Instead of using tuna, could chicken or another meat be used. Could you use corn in place of peas?

    • Julie Evink says

Yes you can just switch things up! Chicken would be a great swap!

Yay, they used to print this on the back of the mac n cheese boxes ages ago.
Wish I could find the original, there were variations listed, like subbing out the tuna for ham and the peas for other veg. I make mine now without the veg entirely, swapping the cans of soup depending on mood. Sometimes 2 mushroom, 1 mushroom & 1 shrimp, 1 cream of broccoli & 1 broccoli cheese, etc.
If you’ve got an old corningware pot, the kind that is stovetop safe, you can skip the bowl and glass dish and mix everything in the same pot and put it right in the oven, Takes the same time to bake. Oh and I skip the breadcrumbs, not fans in our house.
