matar ki dal recipe | green peas dal recipe | hare matar ki daal with step by step photo and video recipe. north indian cuisine is full of curries including gravy based and dry version shared with rice and rotis. typically a lentil or dal based curries like toor dal or moong dal are served alongside with rice. but this recipe is distinctive as it is made from green peas mimicking the popular dal recipe.
i wanted to share matar ki dal recipe long back as this is one such recipe i prepare it frequently in my house. but somehow i overlooked to it and missed it from sharing it with a video. nonetheless, i am sharing this most underrated recipe finally today. as matter of fact, i have a lot of variation to this recipe where i mix and match with a choice of lentil with green peas. however, as the name of this recipe, i have used just green peas without any adulteration to it. perhaps i would share the extended version soon in future. i personally like the combination of toor dal, moong dal and green peas with equal quantity and followed by pressure cooking it.
furthermore, i would like to add few tips, variations and suggestions for matar ki dal recipe. firstly, i have used frozen green peas for this recipe, but the same recipe can also be prepared from dry peas. you may have to soak it overnight before using it though. but personally, i feel frozen one are much easier with less hassle. secondly, i personally like the medium thickness consistency, which is not too thick and not too thin. alternatively, you can control the consistency as per your preference. note that, the peas dal would attain thicker consistency once it cools down. lastly, the hare matar ki daal is not just limited to rice and it tastes equally great with roti and chapati.

Ingredients
- 2 cup peas / matar, soaked/frozen
- 3 cup water
- 1 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1 tsp jeera / cumin
- pinch hing / asafoetida
- few curry leaves
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
- 2 green chilli, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, finely chopped
- ½ tsp garam masala
- ¾ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped
Instructions
firstly, in a blender take 2 cups of soaked peas.
blend to a coarse paste without adding any water.
transfer the coarse peas paste to cooker along with 3 cup water.
pressure cook for 2 whistles on medium flame.
now in a large kadai heat1 tbsp ghee and splutter 1 tsp mustard, 1 tsp jeera, pinch hing and few curry leaves.
now add 1 onion and saute well followed by1 tsp ginger garlic paste and 2 green chilli.
also, add 1 tomato and saute till the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
further, add½ tsp garam masala and ¾ tsp salt.
saute till the spices get cooked well.
add in cooked peas and mix well.
boil on medium flame for 2 minutes or until flavours are absorbed.
now add 2 tbsp coriander leaves and mix well.
finally, serve matar ki dal recipe with hot steamed rice.
