This recipe has been updated from my original post in August 2015.
These days you can put avocado in just about anything and it is tasty – smoothies, salads, even baked goods! But did you know that you can use avocados to make a creamy, rich and delicious dessert? That’s right! This recipe for No Sugar Added Chocolate Avocado Pudding tastes as good as it looks and is good for you.
Get the recipe for this decadent treat (that you could even eat for breakfast!) below. I don’t know about you, but forme, it’s all or nothing. What I mean is if I have a cookie, I want all the cookies. If I have a milkshake, I want to slurp down the whole thing instead of sharing. You get the point!
I have a major sweet tooth and it’s hard to control sometimes. To help keep my wandering eye in check, I don’t keep sweets like this around the house because I know they will be gone in a flash. Out of sight, out of mind!
But instead of depriving myself completely of sweets, I like to make healthier alternatives of some of my favorite indulgences.
Without further ado, let me introduce you to this decadent, naturally sweetened chocolate avocado pudding! There are two secret ingredients in this recipe that I think makes it stand out from all other chocolate avocado pudding recipes: bananas and dates.
A serving size of avocado is only 1/4 of this lovely, creamy fruit, so to help add bulk and natural sweetness, we are adding bananas! The key to keeping this an avocado pudding and not a banana pudding, is to use overly ripe bananas. We are also using dates that are softened in hot water to add an additional layer of sweetness, plus fiber and other nutritional goodness that dates have to offer.
I love that avocado is the star ingredient in this recipe because it is full ofheart-healthy fats, leaving you fuller longer, and is a great source ofvitamin Candpotassium. Did you know that an avocado hasalmost doublethe amount of potassium as a banana?! I love to use avocados for just about anything and the creamy texture of these little powerhouses are perfect for making a super smooth pudding.

- Author: Carly Ferguson
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 4 1x
- Category: snack; dessert
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ripe avocados
- 2 ripe bananas
- 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1/3 cup cacao powder
- 3 dates, softened
- 1 Tablespoon espresso powder
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- To soften the dates, remove the pit and place them in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover with water and microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds. This could also be done by pouring boiling water over the dates and letting them soak for a few minutes.
- Add all of the ingredients to a food processor and pulse on HIGH until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides every now and then. To serve, divide evenly among four bowls (or store any leftovers in the fridge for up to a few days).

This pudding is delicious served on it’s own, topped with coconut flakes and cacao nibs for a little extra crunch, or you could even kick it up a notch with peanut butter coconut whipped cream (now we’re talking!).

It might sound weird, but I promise, it’s delicious! The key is to use a blender of some sort to get it extra creamy. Enjoy!

I used to working a fine dining restaurant. I remember when a new chef created a key lime avocado “popsicle” with some chocolate in there somewhere for dessert as a special one night. I was so skeptical, but it was SO good! I told people you get the creaminess from the avocado and the flavor from the lime and chocolate. Love avocado in anything, and chocolate too, so I definitely can’t wait to try this recipe!
